International Criminal Defense Attorneys Association

The International Criminal Defence Attorney's Association (ICDAA) develops visibility on the international stage through affiliations with prestigious organizations, notably at the United Nations. We seek forums through which defence lawyers can share their experiences, opinions and expertise with wider global networks interested in the field of international criminal justice and human rights.

Consultative Status at the United Nations: ECOSOC

ICDAA is recognized as an Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC). The title was granted in 2004 in recognition of the role played by ICDAA for more than five years in the field of international criminal justice (see Achievements).

Privileges granted through this status include access to UN committees, invitations to UN conferences, attendance at UN meetings, circulation of statements and policy positions at meetings, and designation of UN representatives. Under the UN charter, ECOSOC consults with NGOs, academics and the business sector in carrying out its mandate, which includes: the promotion of higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

This status gives ICDAA the opportunity to place issues of international criminal justice and human rights higher on the agendas of the United Nations, NGOs and other international organizations - and ultimately of UN member states. It also provides another forum that helps lawyers build their professional networks and an international legal community.

INGOs status with the Quebec Government

The ICDAA is recognized as an international non-governmental organization (INGO) by the Quebec government. This status enables ICDAA to grant the right to work and other privileges to its non-Canadian employees. An INGO is created by a private initiative, exclusive of any intergovernmental agreement, and includes persons (private or public, physical or legal) of various nationalities.

NGO registered as civil society organization with the Organization of American States (OAS)

The ICDAA has being granted the status of civil society organization before the Organization of American States (OAS). It will enable ICDAA to participate in various meetings of the OAS and to submit proposals to member states. Only 115 Pan American organizations have been granted such a status.
