ICDAA and the International Criminal Bar (ICB)

The ICDAA and International Criminal Bar are sister organizations. They have related but distinct missions, with the former focused on the needs of defence counsel and the latter on the development of the international legal profession more broadly defined. The ICDAA led the coalition of lawyers, national bars and NGOs that created the ICB in 2002-2003 (See Objectives - Achievements - Chronology). We hosted the ICB in collaboration with Netherlands Bar for two years. The two organizations have overlapping memberships and executives.
We are actively involved in building and promoting the new bar, the first of its kind. We engage in outreach to bars and legal associations around the world, with two linked objectives: (i) build support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) and (ii) recruit members into the ICB.
ICDAA representatives have travelled to countries in Latin America and Africa in order to promote the ICC and build a diverse global membership for the ICB - representing many lawyers who will appear before ICC. These outreach initiatives are intended primarily to strengthen the ICC by addressing issues regarding the rights of the accused and the competence of counsel. They are often linked to workshops or training sessions on the international criminal justice system.
