Projects & Activities

The ICDAA is building on its achievements and the international reputation earned by its network of defence lawyers and other experts. Having focused on the creation of the International Criminal Bar (See Third Pillar) as a sister institution, we are now expanding the projects and activities aimed specifically at defence counsel. We are developing a Defence Watch for practitioners, more training programs and outreach programs in Asia , Africa and Latin America (See Humanitarian Projects).

One of the lasting outcomes of both the ICDAA's advocacy campaigns and training courses is not the "what" but the "how" - the creation of cross-cultural teams of lawyers (mainly volunteers) to get the work done. Over time, these activities create a social network - a growing group of lawyers who know each other and can share their knowledge of international criminal justice with colleagues at home. This is what we refer to as the growing "legal community" of international criminal justice. Such communities of practice are vital to the health, and performance standards, of any professional group.

With each activity carried out, we build our international visibility and membership. Networking is at the heart of our approach. It involves such activities as:

  • Facilitating communication among experts to exchange ideas, explore joint areas of work, and share best practices;
  • Referring requests for information and assistance to appropriate experts or resource persons;
  • Undertaking International Criminal Court and International Criminal Bar outreach campaigns in various areas of the world;
  • Establishing key partnerships to cooperate and share knowledge on international criminal justice issues;
  • Helping to strengthen institutional capacities of legal aid bureaux in transitional democracies.

The legal community is hard to define. But it plays a key role in building the Third Pillar and to the effectiveness of the ICC and other international tribunals.
