Outreach to the United States & Latin America

Despite the opposition of the Bush administration to the International Criminal Court, the ICDAA has attracted the support of two major US legal associations: the National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (NACDL) and the American Bar Association (ABA). ICDAA is a formal partner of NACDL and the ABA has decided to become a member of the ICB. In the process, the ICDAA has built a valuable network of US defence lawyers who support the ICC and have contributed in important ways to our training programs and advocacy campaigns.
We are working with our partners to create a sustained dialogue on international justice in North America . The goal is to engage influential groups in the United States in understanding the importance and the mechanics of their involvement in an emerging international justice system.
The ICDAA also has a close working relationship with t he American NGO Coalition for the ICC ( AMICC), the main American organization pushing for acceptance of the ICC and eventual US ratification of the 1998 Rome Statute (the international treaty that created the ICC.)
United States
The purpose of this project is to create a Dialogue on International Justice that will engage influential groups in the United States in understanding the importance and the mechanics of their involvement in an emerging international justice system. The influential groups that will be targeted in this phase of the International Dialogue process will be the legal community.

Latin America
Through a 30-year process of democratization and extension of the rule of law, Latin American lawyers and bars have gained extensive experience with international human rights law and the standards of international criminal law. Many are strong supporters of the newly-created International Criminal Court (ICC) and of newly independent bar associations, including the ICB.
To build support and awareness, the ICDAA has organized a series of missions to Latin America in partnership with lawyers and judges, Presidents of Bars, government officials, representatives of NGOs as well as with academic and research institutions and the media. ICDAA leaders have made presentations and extended visits to Chile , Costa Rica , Mexico and Peru in 2003-2004.
The branch of ICDAA in Peru is active in co-organizing seminars on international criminal law in this region of the world.
